Ukraine hasn't signed association agreement with EU at Vilnius summit

Ukraine has not signed the Association Agreement with the EU at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius.

During the official ceremony on Friday, the European Union initialed association agreements with Moldova and Georgia and signed an agreement liberalizing visa rules with Azerbaijan.

At the moment, the leaders of the EU and the Eastern Partnership countries went into a plenary sitting of the summit, after which press conferences will follow.

As reported, on November 21 the Ukrainian government decided to suspend work on the Association Agreement with the European Union and declared its determination to significantly improve trade and economic relations with Russia and CIS countries.

Kyiv said that Ukraine's economy would incur considerable losses if the association agreement with EU was signed.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said on November 28 in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine that the position of Ukraine hadn't changed in Vilnius. When asked whether the possibility of holding trilateral Ukraine-EU-Russia talks had been discussed, Linkevicius admitted that this topic had been addressed at the very beginning of the summit, but the EU made it clear that "this path was unacceptable." "We cannot imagine how a third party can take part in the processes that are exclusively a matter for bilateral talks, in which any third party has no authority," the minister said.
