Azarov: Risks from EU-Ukraine association Russia is worried about could be minimized via WTO mechanisms

The risks from the possible signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union that concern Russia about could be eliminated using mechanisms developed by the World Trade Organization, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.

"Through the use of mechanisms foreseen in the WTO - for instance certificates of origin, joint customs checkpoints - these risks could be brought to naught," the premier wrote on his page on Facebook on Friday.

At the same time, Azarov noted that a free trade area could remove trade barriers to the movement of goods between the EU and Ukraine to the maximum.

"The Russian side fears that in that case, European products could be transported to the Customs Union states via Ukraine, as the Customs Union and Ukraine also have an agreement on a free trade area. Is there a reason for such fears? In theory, yes," he said.

Azarov added that he had discussed the abovementioned issues and a number of other ones with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev during their last meeting.
