Ombudsperson: No legal way for Tymoshenko's treatment abroad

Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Valeria Lutkovska has said that there are currently no legal grounds for the treatment of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko abroad.

"There are currently no legal grounds for any person convicted in Ukraine to undergo [medical] treatment abroad. The same conclusion was made by lawyers from the Law Academy in Kharkiv," she said on Radio Liberty on Thursday.

"Maybe it's necessary to look for this way, but it currently doesn't exist," she added.

As reported, Tymoshenko's daughter, Yevhenia, said on July 1, citing German doctors that her mother was in need of urgent surgery.

The prime minister's daughter noted that her family trusts Ukrainian doctors "who are doing their utmost" but realizes that Ukrainian specialists are "under severe pressure." Therefore relatives insist that the operation be conducted by German doctors from Charite clinic.

The Ukrainian Health Ministry, in turn, said that doctors from Charite clinic said that the conditions at Kharkiv-based Central Clinical Hospital No. 5, where Tymoshenko is undergoing treatment, were adequate.

Many European diplomats and politicians think that if Tymoshenko is allowed to undergo medical treatment abroad, Ukraine will manage to sign the Association Agreement with the EU.
