Cox-Kwasniewski mission to continue its work for 2 months, then its fate will be decided, says European Parliament

The leadership of the European Parliament will consider the issue of ending the observation mission of former president of the European Parliament Pat Cox and former president of Poland Alexander Kwasniewski in two months, and until that time the mission will continue its work.

This decision was taken in Strasbourg on Wednesday during a meeting of the Conference of Presidents, Interfax-Ukraine learned at the European Parliament.

The European Parliament's representative noted that observers have just returned from Ukraine so they were not ready to make a report. Due to the lack of progress, the need for the mission was put into question.

At the same time, leaders of political groups, the vice president and the president of the European Parliament after a lengthy debate decided to return to this issue in two months.

Vice President of the European Parliament Jacek Protasiewicz wrote on his Twitter page: "After a long discussion, we have extended the Cox-Kwasniewski mission of the European Parliament in Ukraine. In two months we will reevaluate the situation."

Earlier, it was expected that the mandate of the mission would be extended until the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius, which is scheduled for November 2013.

The Cox-Kwasniewski mission on the case of Ukraine's former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko started to work in Ukraine on June 11, 2012, after Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and EP President Martin Schulz reached relevant agreements.

Later on, the mission's mandate was expanded to the case of former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko and the trial on former Acting Defense Minister of Ukraine Valeriy Ivaschenko.

The mission's activities were suspended during the parliamentary elections in Ukraine and resumed after them.
