Ukrainian opposition determined to ensure Tymoshenko's, Lutsenko's medical treatment abroad

The Ukrainian opposition is determined to ensure that former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who is currently serving her prison term in Kharkiv and is undergoing medical treatment at a local hospital, is transferred for treatment abroad, says Arseniy Yatseniuk, the leader of the Batkivschyna party parliamentary faction.

"I think one of the priorities [for the opposition] should be to make sure that Tymoshenko receives medical aid at an appropriate and worthy clinic outside Ukraine," Yatseniuk said at a meeting of the opposition parliamentary factions on Thursday.

He insisted that the matter is about "Yulia Tymoshenko's physical survival," and the same concerns former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko.

Yatseniuk admitted that this is not easy to accomplish, but expressed the hope that, by acting together, the opposition factions "will achieve justice."

Tymoshenko is being treated at Central Clinical Hospital No.5 in Kharkiv with the use of therapy and medications recommended by doctors from the Berlin-based Charite clinic. The ex-premier declared a civil disobedience campaign on January 18 and has been abstaining from medical procedures since then.

Lutsenko was receiving treatment at a medical ward of the Kyiv pretrial detention facility and the Kyiv Emergency Medicine Hospital during his arrest before his conviction. Lutsenko underwent surgery at the Kyiv-based Oberig clinic on January 23 and was returned to the Mena penitentiary in the Chernihiv region to continue serving his prison term for a number of crimes in office.
