Yefremov calls for adoption of efficient decisions concerning individual voting of MPs

The leader of the Regions Party faction in parliament, Oleksandr Yefremov, has supported the adoption of efficient decisions concerning the individual voting of MPs and called for the establishment of liability for missing parliamentary meetings without valid reasons.

"There should be such an issue [of the personal voting of MPs]. And while it is moving forward, we have to discuss it and work out the procedure in such a way that it works," he said at a press conference on Monday.

"I really do not want us to adopt the simplest procedure, for example, voting using touch buttons. And tomorrow all TV channels will show what technical devices are used in the session hall to block these buttons. All of them already know about it. This would be the next step in holding up the parliament to ridicule, and it's silly to go this way," he said.

Yefremov said that in the issue of ensuring the individual voting of MPs it is necessary, first and foremost, to establish the liability of MPs who do not vote individually.

"I proposed a simple formula. Let's agree that if an MP is absent from the vote three times without good reason, then, he automatically loses his parliamentary mandate. Everyone with whom I spoke immediately fell into a stupor and said that it is contrary to the constitution and that the Constitutional Court will not agree with this," he said.

"If a person does not fulfill the law, then there should be the standard of liability for this person, and there should be no different law that tells them how to comply with constitutional norms," he said.

However, he said that the parliament "will still come to individual voting."

"This question lies in the speed of movement on this issue," Yefremov said.
