Ukraine's Svoboda ready to drop mandates, waits for official proposal from opposition partners

The nationalist all-Ukrainian Union Svoboda is prepared not to take the seats it has won in the Verkhovna Rada but it has not received official proposals to the effect from opposition partners and is studying possible legal consequences of this step.

"Svoboda is the most decisive and radical opposition force in word and deed. We are prepared for any action, including the above-mentioned. But we have not received official offers from the Batkivschyna leaders: all we have is the statement by Hrytsenko (Batkivschyna co-leader Anatoliy Hrytsenko)," Svoboda spokesman, parliamentary candidate Yuriy Syrotiuk told Interfax-Ukraine.

In his words, Svoboda lawyers are studying possible consequences of this step. "If the decision is made jointly with other opposition forces, Svoboda will be the first to fulfill it. The question is how serious our allies are and how much the decision is coordinated by partners: we have one party, and the united opposition has several. Could it be so that some drop their mandates while candidates running in single-seat constituencies stay in the parliament?" he wondered.

Syrotiuk said Svoboda and Batkivschyna had coordinated a joint action to take place near the Ukrainian Central Elections Commission building on Monday for defending their votes.

He also said that the fight for votes had not been complete and Yuriy Levchenko, a candidate who ran in the capital district No 223, would hardly understand his associates if they quit before the end of the count of votes.

The nationalists are prepared to take part in a new election and hope their results will be even better, he said. "We have shown to the public how we can protect our votes and the choice of all Ukrainians, so we forecast that the number of Svoboda supporters may practically double in the case of an early election. We are not afraid of a new election because none of us has mandates now and is tempted to keep the place in the sun. We do not have a single deputy, but we are much more active and efficient in protecting our votes than our allies, who have won over 100 seats," he said.

Hrytsenko said on Sunday the Batkivschyna party should hold a congress and reject seats at the Verkhovna Rada over vote rigging.

The UDAR Party of Vitali Klitschko is also considering the possible congress, which will drop Verkhovna Rada mandates and deny recognition to the parliamentary election. "The UDAR party is considering the possibility to hold a party congress, to abandon mandates won by candidates running in single-seat constituencies and party ticket, and to deny recognition to the parliamentary election," party campaign staff head Vitaliy Kovalchuk said on Sunday.
