Wilfried Martens has been re-elected president of the European People's Party (EPP) for three more years.

This decision was made at a congress of the party in Bucharest.

Martens received 91% in the vote.

"It is a great honor to win the confidence of the congress delegates to lead our party for another three years. At this difficult time for Europe, with a heightened sense of confidence I remain faithful and committed to my political family and the European project," Martens said after the vote.

The congress is also planning to elect the party's vice president, secretary general, and treasurer.

Ukraine's Batkivschyna Party, the People's Movement (Rukh) of Ukraine, and the Our Ukraine Party are members of the European People's Party.

The party said that Vitali Klitschko's UDAR Party is also planning to join the EPP. Ukrainian MP Iryna Heraschenko applied for the membership on behalf of the UDAR Party on Wednesday, October 17.

Martens is one of those who founded the EPP in 1967. He has headed the party since 1990. In 1979-1992 he was the premier of Belgium. In 1994-1998 he was a member of the European Parliament and headed the EPP Group there.
