Ukraine won't face questions about democracy after elections, says Yanukovych

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said he hopes that no one will have any doubts about respect for democratic standards in Ukraine after the parliamentary elections.

"When the elections are over, we will build new relations and restore relations with many countries of the European Union, and the United States. Today Ukraine is passing another maturity test, so these elections should not be worse than the previous ones," Yanukovych told Ukrainian journalists in New York on Tuesday, September 25.

When asked about his opinion on the recently adopted resolution of the U.S. Senate on the case of former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko, the president said that such resolutions should be treated seriously.

"Of course, we should treat such resolutions seriously. However, we also know the assessments of the Department of State and the White House. They differ a bit," the president said.

At the same time, Yanukovych added that "we are not the one who should assess the U.S. Senate," [rather] U.S. citizens should do this.

While speaking about the upcoming parliamentary elections in Ukraine, the head of state said that much would depend on the participants of the election process.

"I mean the human element, and as for the authorities, they more than anyone want the elections to be seen as fair, transparent, and democratic," Yanukovych said.
