President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has said she is impressed by the speed and high quality of the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

"The opening of the clusters, the accession process is a merits-based, it's a very challenging work intensive process and I must say I'm deeply impressed by the high quality and the speed with which Ukraine is moving forward," she said at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.

According to the European Commission President, it is "now important to open the fundamentals cluster [which includes the following chapters: Judiciary and Fundamental Rights; Justice, Freedom and Security; Public Procurement; Statistics; Financial Control] and then of course in parallel clusters can be worked on."

"So, again, it's merits-based but it's impressive to see how fast and with what high quality Ukraine is moving forward," she said.
