Ukrhydroenergo revises plan for development of 'green' hydrogen, working on more powerful projects – company head

PrJSC Ukrhydroenergo, together with the German company Andritz Hydro GmbH, is working on a project for the production of “green” hydrogen in Ukraine with a capacity of 5 MW instead of the previously announced 1 MW, and then 2-3 MW, said the company’s general director Ihor Syrota.

"Now we are talking about 5-10 MW. Firstly, as for 1 MW it will be cheaper to build 5 MW than 2 MW. If to build 2 MW it will cost EUR3 million, while 5 MW will cost not EUR7.5 million but EUR5-6 million,” he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

Syrota added that for this purpose, a new memorandum was signed with Andritz in October of this year, and the previous trilateral memorandum, in which MAN Energy Solutions participated, did not produce corresponding results.

“That’s why we signed a memorandum with Andritz. They have two divisions that deal exclusively with hydrogen. Andritz specialists also have some experience with the Norwegians. In addition, we have learned a lot of new things this year,” explained the head of Ukrhydroenergo.

As he noted, Andritz is very important for the company, since the main driver of green hydrogen in Europe is Germany.

"We proposed to develop a feasibility study. Andritz, as our partner, will seek funds from the German government to finance the project. Yes, this is not the economy for today. This is the future. We must move towards this. We already have developments and understand where consumption may be of these 5-10 MW, we understand that this consumption exists in Ukraine,” Syrota assured.

At the same time, he has not yet begun to name the objects of consumption, but indicated that it is quite possible to find money for such a project.

“If we see that the project is effective for a period of three, four or five years, then we will look for a grant for a pilot project. Conventionally, EUR6 million. For Europeans to allocate such an amount for a pilot hydrogen project in Ukraine is quite acceptable. This is not EUR100 million, not a billion ", said the head of Ukrhydroenergo.
