2009 gas contract worth 10 times less than now – Tymoshenko

Ukraine's population paid ten times less for gas than it did pursuant to the "good" contracts concluded by the current authorities, Batkivschyna Party faction head Yulia Tymoshenko has said.

"They will tell you that the 2009 gas contract was bad, but open the books from 2009… You paid ten times less for gas then, compared to the "good" contracts negotiated by [Ukrainian President Petro] Poroshenko, [Prime Minister Volodymyr] Groysman and [ex Prime Minister Arsen] Yatsenyuk. The comparison will give you an accurate understanding about who worked for the country, for the country's development, and who is promoting mega corruption," Tymoshenko told journalists at the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Thursday.

According to Tymoshenko, Poroshenko and his team have mounted a smear campaign against her and her party because they are Poroshenko's leading political opponents.

"The entire criminal gang from the Yanukovych era has gathered around Ukraine's top oligarch Poroshenko. They and the people they brought with them have branded me and my party as enemy number one. This is why there is so much support for me across the country," Tymoshenko said.

Poroshenko earlier in the day said there should be political liability for former Ukrainian officials who signed the 2009 gas agreement with Russia, adding that former Ukrainian officials [Tymoshenko] who signed the deal had forfeited Ukraine's national interests.
