Full nuclear cycle could be created in Ukrainian power sector – minister

The full nuclear cycle in the Ukrainian power sector could be created if favorable conditions for investors are granted, Deputy Prime Minister - Regional Development Minister of Ukraine Hennadiy Zubko said at a briefing on Thursday.

"Ukraine has own strategic map for this scenario [the creation of the full nuclear cycle]. Big investment is required, and the conditions are always needed for investment. The introduction of the law on the electricity market creates opportunities for investment. If these conditions, this basis, are granted, each investor who comes to Ukraine will understand how his funds could be returned. Then we will be able to speak about the full cycle. The creation of the full nuclear cycle in Ukraine is possible," he said.

Zubko said that Ukraine in 2015 hit a record in nuclear electricity production growth – 57%.

He said that 70% of power transmission lines in the country require modernization.

"We have target expenses of 12%. Everything that exceeds them [for example, Kryvorizhteplotsentral is losing 47%] requires modernization. This is almost 70% of power lines in Ukraine," he said.

He added that heat pipelines is one of the acutest issues, as Ukraine today is losing up to 25% of heat.
