Medvedev: Russia concerned about Kyiv's attempts to upset atomic energy cooperation

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has warned Kyiv authorities against loading U.S. fuel in Soviet-type reactors of Ukrainian nuclear power plants as such attempts are fraught with technological problems.

"We cannot help but be concerned about the intention of the Ukrainian administration to upset industrial cooperation in the field of atomic energy. The attempts to load U.S. fuel in Soviet-type reactors of Ukrainian nuclear power plants are a deplorable example of a dangerous influence of politics on the economy," Medvedev wrote in his opinion piece, "Russia and Ukraine: Living by New Rules," published by Nezavisimaya Gazeta on Monday.

The intention has not been coordinated with Russian reactor unit developers and computing engineers, the premier said. "Experiments staged under the pressure of U.S. producers are technologically unsafe," Medvedev stated.

He recalled that Ukraine and Eastern Europe, including the Czech Republic, had tried to replace Russian fuel with the U.S. one. "The experiments caused serious technological problems and shut down the reactors," Medvedev said.

"It is good that common sense has won and Russia and Ukraine have managed to agree on nuclear fuel supplies for next year," the premier underscored.

Russia has invariably met its commitment to deliver nuclear fuel to Ukrainian nuclear power plants even during the severest aggravations of the armed domestic conflict in Ukraine and it continues to do so, he said.
