Ukraine ready for conduct sowing campaign in short terms, says ministry

Agricultural producers in Ukraine have all the required resources to conduct the sowing campaign in short terms, Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk has said.

The report of the ministry, referring to Prysiazhniuk, said that at present farmers have seeds that amount to 105% of their need in seeds and mineral fertilizers – 124%.

The minister said that the situation with fuel supplies to farmer is stable.

As for financial resources, Prysiazhniuk said that currently farmer have a chance to raise funds via the signing of forward contracts with the Agrarian Fund of Ukraine and the State Food-Grain Corporation. The minister said that, for example, the State Food-Grain Corporation has over UAH 1.5 billion on its accounts.

As reported, the sowing campaign in Ukraine this year is conducted with a large delay. Expert fear that the country will fail to sow spring crops in optimal terms.

Earlier, the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry forecast that areas under spring grains and leguminous crops in Ukraine in 2013 could reach 8.1 million hectares, which is almost 10% down on 2012.

This year the ministry also expected no more 5% of winter crops to be reseeded on the sown 8.1 million hectares.
