Poland ready to temporarily close border for agricultural products from Ukraine – PM

Warsaw is negotiating with Kyiv on a temporary ban on the movement of goods across the border, Polish Radio RMF reported, citing the head of the Polish government, Donald Tusk, on Wednesday.

"Representatives of the Ukrainian side and I discussed the possibility of temporarily closing the border and stopping the exchange of goods," Tusk radio quotes.

At the same time, he noted that "this temporary measure would be painful for both sides."

It is expected that these topics will be the subject of discussion at a meeting between Tusk and protesting agricultural producers, which is scheduled for Thursday.

Commenting on the prospects for the meeting, Tusk noted: "I am not prime minister for Poland to leave the EU or block the border with Ukraine."

He stressed: "I am ready for firm decisions when it comes to the border with Ukraine, but with a preliminary agreement with Kyiv, so that there is no unnecessary tension. We must find a long-term solution."

According to Tusk, "perhaps it is worth talking about additional payments for grain, which will allow Polish products to be sold as soon as possible."

At the same time, he noted that in general the Polish state can help make Polish grain more attractive in terms of price compared to Ukrainian grain.

For a long time now, mass protests by agricultural producers have been taking place in Poland against the supply of agricultural products that come duty-free from Ukraine.
