Scholz: There will be no ground troops from European countries or NATO in Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz strongly opposes an idea of sending European or NATO troops to Ukraine.
"We agreed that everyone must do more for Ukraine in Paris yesterday. Ukraine needs weapons, ammunition and air defense. We are working on it. It is clear: there will be no ground troops from European countries or NATO. That applies," he said on X Social Network on Tuesday.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron claimed that the dispatch of western troops cannot be "ruled out," but emphasized that at the moment there is no consensus on this issue.
London also said it has no plans for a large-scale deployment of troops to Ukraine, according to The Guardian.
"Beyond the small number of personnel, we do have in country supporting the armed forces of Ukraine, we haven't got any plans for large-scale deployment," a spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Tuesday, adding that large numbers of Ukrainian troops were being trained in the UK.
The leaders of several NATO member states, particularly the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, also ruled out the possibility of sending their troops to Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance has no such plans.
