Ukraine covers its need for donor blood; no need for supplies from abroad – Liashko

Ukraine independently meets the need for donor blood, including for supplying the front; there is currently no need for supplies from abroad, said Minister of Health Viktor Liashko.

"During martial law, the government made a decision that allows blood to be supplied from abroad. We have never used this because Ukrainians are conscientious and continue to donate blood," he said during a telethon on Friday.

Liashko said that currently the system of providing blood and its components is being transformed in accordance with European directives.

In addition, he recalled that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, regulations have been adopted that allow combat medics who have undergone appropriate training to conduct blood transfusions directly in the combat zone.

"This decision was not made out of a good life. This is one of our responses to the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into the territory of our country. We understand what kind of war is going on, and in February 2022 we issued an order from the Ministry of Health, which regulated the problem of combating hypovolemic shock [emergency a pathological condition caused by a rapid decrease in circulating blood volume], which is formed in the event of blood loss during injuries," he said.

Liashko emphasized that such a solution allows one to increase the chances of survival and save a person's life.

As reported, according to the president of the Ukrainian Association of Donors of Ukraine, co-founder of the DonorUA platform, Iryna Slavinska, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the need for blood in Ukraine has increased by 60%, to at least 500,000 donations per year.
