Informal EU Summit to reaffirm commitment to support Ukraine in fight against Russian aggression

At the upcoming Informal EU Summit, the European leaders will reaffirm their commitment to support Ukraine in its fight against the Russian aggression. The issue of kicking off the EU membership talks is not on the agenda since it is scheduled for December, a European senior official told reporters in Brussels on Tuesday.

The Informal EU Summit will take place in Granada, Spain, on October 6.

The official said it is expected that the EU leaders will once again reaffirm commitment to support Ukraine, including weapons supply and financial assistance.

Speaking about Ukraine's membership prospects, the official said the European Commission is expected to present a report at the beginning of November [earlier, it was announced for the middle of October] to give European leaders an opportunity to assess reforms implemented by Ukraine to start the membership talks.

The enlargement of the EU is expected to be discussed in December and a decision will be made also in December, the official said, adding that it will be based on the Commission's report.

He also categorically denied the assumption that the issue of migration has removed the Ukraine issue from the list of priority ones at the Summit of the European Political Community due ahead of the informal summit in Granada.

The Ukraine issue has been among agenda priorities since the beginning of the war and even before it, the official said, adding that the issue was discussed during every meeting of the European Council. Ukraine will be on the agenda of the European Political Community, there will be a session and bilateral meetings, he said.
