Canadian PM announces sanctions on 5 Russians, 32 Russian defense, manufacturing enterprises

Canada is imposing sanctions on five Russian citizens and 32 defense and manufacturing enterprises, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday.

According to the Toronto Star, the sanctions will apply to businessmen Roman Abramovich and Alisher Usmanov, Russian Elections Commission Chairperson Ella Pamfilova, as well as Yelena Morozova and Igor Yanchuk.

Thirty-two defense, energy and financial entities will also fall under restrictions for playing a role in the Ukraine situation.

These are the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Irkut Corporation, the Progress Rocket and Space Center, OJSC Admiralty Shipbuilding Plant, the Kazan Helicopter Plant, Rostec-Azimut, JSC Sukhoi Company, and a number of research organizations.

Trudeau also said that Ottawa is exploring the possibility of transporting refugees from Ukraine to Canada.

The Prime Minister said that in the short term, Canada does not have the ability to compensate for the current supply of oil and gas from Russia to Europe.
