Ukrainian Ombudsperson: Since start of Russian invasion of Ukraine, 41 children died, 76 injured

Since the beginning of the hostilities of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, 41 children have died, and 76 children have been injured, Liudmyla Denisova, Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, said.

"As of 12:00 on March 8, 2022, since the beginning of the invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, 41 children were killed, and 76 children were injured," Denisova said in a message on her Telegram channel.

According to the Ombudsperson, law enforcement officers in Dnipropetrovsk region evacuated another 300 people from Kharkiv.

"Among those rescued is a mother with three children who came under fire from Russian artillery at night. As a result of the shelling, one of her babies was injured by the shock wave. Also, during a conversation with the police, the woman said that a neighbor's child died in front of them," Denisova's message says.

The report also states that during the shelling of the Russian army, Derhachi Lyceum No. 3 and residential areas of the city were attacked in the city of Derhachi, Kharkiv region.

"At least three dead and 15 injured, including a four-year-old child," the Ombudsperson emphasizes.

In addition, according to her, on Tuesday morning it became known about four more wounded civilians in Donetsk region, including a 14-year-old boy.

"It is still impossible to establish the number of dead and wounded in Mariupol and Volnovakha. These cities remain blocked by Russian occupation forces," the Ukrainian Ombudsperson informs.

According to Denisova, once again the invader fired at the civilian population of the city of Mykolaiv.

"This time, the invaders covered the Balabanivka residential area in the southern part of the city with artillery: 60 houses were damaged. Most of the bombs were cluster ones, banned by the 1949 Geneva Convention for use throughout the world," the Ombudsperson emphasizes.

In Kharkiv, according to Denisova, about 30 secondary schools, 27 kindergartens, five institutions of higher education, and children's boarding schools were attacked.

"The actions of Russian occupation troops are a direct violation of the Hague and Geneva conventions! I appeal to the international community and international human rights organizations with a request to take all possible measures to stop the military attack of the Russian Federation. I insist, NATO countries – close the sky!" the Ombudsperson said in a statement.
