U.S. not planning new sanctions on Russia over Abkhazia, S. Ossetia - Bolton

All necessary restrictions have been imposed on Russia in connection with the 2008 conflict, U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton said on Friday after meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze in Tbilisi.

According to Georgia's Channel One, Bolton was asked whether the United States was considering additional restrictions on Russia in the context of the "occupied territories." Bolton said all necessary restrictions were already in place, and some of them were endorsed after the 2008 war.

Georgia does not recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and still sees them as its own territories.

Bolton said he did not know whether the presidents of the United States and Russia would address relations with Georgia at their upcoming face-to-face because the meeting will be brief and its agenda remains unknown.

He also said he had productive and positive meetings with Georgian officials in Tbilisi.
