Businessman Nahorny suspected of state treason says case is politically motivated

Businessman, volunteer and ex-spouse of Olympic gymnast Liliia Podkopayeva, Tymofiy Nahorny, has said criminal case against him for state treason is politically motivated.

During a press conference at the Kyiv-based Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Friday he said Ukraine's SBU Security Service had fabricated evidence in the case against him.

"Several weeks ago our team announced political plans. Our civil platform "Shoulder to Shoulder" was to review political initiatives. I understand 70% of Ukrainian voters are looking for an alternative, for new faces to replace the older generation of politicians. We tried to unite thousands of people throughout Ukraine," Nahorny said.

Nahorny's lawyer Kateryna Voytenko said Kyiv's Appeal Court on October 18 will review a complaint of prosecutors against Kyiv Pechersky District Court's ruling on pretrial confinement.

"There is not enough evidence to charge Nahorny under Article 11 of Ukraine's Criminal Code (state treason). We will do our best to contest the prosecution's arguments," she said.

As earlier reported, Nahorny was detained on October 2, 2018 on suspicion of state treason and embezzlement charges.

Kyiv's Pechersky District Court on October 4, 2018 ordered pretrial confinement, setting bail at UAH 528,600.
