Rada appoints Doctor of Juridical Science Vasylenko NABU auditor on its quota

The Verkhovna Rada has delegated Doctor of Juridical Science Volodymyr Vasylenko as its representative to the commission on the audit of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) for 2016.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that according to the results of the rating vote, another candidate, a partner of Baker & McKenzie, U.S. citizen Thomas Firestone, got 208 votes of people's deputies, while Vasylenko - 276.

After that, the Verkhovna Rada approved the latter as NABU auditor with 289 votes of MPs.

As reported, on March 21, 2017, the Verkhovna Rada failed to delegate Nigel Brown on its quota to the commission on NABU audit as only 200 parliamentarians supported his candidacy, with at least 226 votes required to make the decision.

On July 12, the Verkhovna Rada committee on preventing and combating corruption recommended four candidates for consideration by parliament for the post of NABU auditor. They were professor at Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University Oleksandra Yanovska, U.S. attorney Martha Boersch, Spanish prosecutor Carlos Castresana, and a lawyer and professor at the Ukrainian Bar Association, Serhiy Honcharenko.

On July 13, people's deputies refused to approve any of these candidates.

On February 7, 2018, the parliament's anti-corruption committee appealed to Speaker Andriy Parubiy with the request to put the candidacies of Martha Boersch, Carlos Castresana and Serhiy Honcharenko for the post of an independent auditor of the NABU to the vote in the session hall.

Later it became known that U.S. prosecutor Boersch had withdrawn her candidacy for the post of NABU auditor. According to media reports, a similar refusal was made by Honcharenko. Thus, the only candidate for the post of NABU auditor is former Spanish prosecutor Castresana.
