Klympush-Tsintsadze says Ukraine's decision to withdraw from CIS coordinating bodies is political

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze has said termination of Ukraine's participation in the coordination bodies of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is a purely political issue.

"I think this is a purely political issue, it's a question of not being an organization that is actually guided by the aggressor," she said on the 112 Ukraine TV channel when asked what would entail the termination of Ukraine's participation in the coordination bodies of the CIS.

According to her, since the beginning of the Russian aggression Ukraine has not paid contributions to the organs of the CIS.

As reported, on May 2, Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) supported the proposal to end participation of Ukrainian representatives in the activities of CIS bodies.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in mid-March that the Foreign Ministry had prepared proposals to withdraw from the CIS.

On April 12, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko proposed to prepare proposals jointly with the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on the official cessation of the participation of the Ukrainian state in the CIS. He also said that he considers it necessary to carry out an inventory of the entire regulatory and legal framework drawn up by Ukraine within the framework of the CIS, for compliance with the national interests of the state.

In addition, Poroshenko called on foreign partners to review contractual obligations with Russia for "sensitive areas of cooperation."

Ukraine was one of the three signatory countries of the agreement on the creation of the CIS on December 8, 1991 along with the Russian Federation and Belarus. However, in January 1993, Ukraine did not sign the CIS Charter at the summit of the CIS, where the Charter of the Commonwealth was adopted. Since the spring of 2014, Kyiv's participation in the CIS events has been reduced to a minimum.
