Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and the U.S. Congress delegation at a meeting in Munich have considered the issue of financing assistance programs for the Ukrainian state, condemned the intention to hold Russian presidential elections in occupied Crimea and coordinated further steps for de-occupation of the peninsula.

"The parties condemned the intention of Russia to hold presidential elections in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea. They coordinated further steps to strengthen the international front for de-occupation of Ukraine's Crimea," the presidential press service said after the meeting.

Poroshenko expressed gratitude for the leading role of the U.S. Congress in the fight against Russian aggression, in protecting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The head of state stressed the decision made by Washington to provide Ukraine with lethal weapons and strengthen sanctions pressure is not only the response to Moscow's destructive position but also the formation of a favorable background for the promotion of the peace process in Donbas.

He expressed hope that the financing of assistance programs for the security of the Ukrainian state, including the provision of defensive weapons, will be further supported by the U.S. Congress.
