Opposition Bloc calls for Ukraine's neutral status

Kyiv should stick to its neutrality status, the Opposition Bloc in the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada said.

"We believe, and this is also my personal opinion, that the most efficient model for Ukraine would be a model of neutrality, like Austria or Switzerland have," Opposition Bloc faction cochairman Oleksandr Vilkul told Interfax on Thursday.

He also said that the Thursday vote on bill No. 6470 would have no political meaning.

The Verkhovna Rada has defined deeper cooperation between Ukraine and NATO with the purpose of eventual entry into the alliance as the foundation of the Ukrainian foreign policy. Bill No. 6470, making adjustments to certain legislative acts on the Ukrainian foreign policy, gained the support of 276 parliamentarians on June 8.
