Fourth power unit at Chornobyl NPP covered with new safety shield

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on November 29 attended the ceremony of completing the coverage of the destroyed fourth power unit of Chornobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) with a new safety shield, called the New Safety Confinement (NSC).

"This is the world's largest movable structure ever built by the mankind. The coalition consisting of 28 countries in support of Ukraine has collected more than EUR1.417 billion to build it together with Ukraine," Poroshenko said at the ceremony of completing the skidding of the Chornobyl New Safe Confinement Sarcophagus.

According to him, 10,000 workers from many countries participated in building the NSC, 40 states are involved in the project.

"Everyone knows how difficult times are now in Ukraine. No one could imagine that the Chornobyl tragedy will not be the worst one Ukraine had to pass through. And that Ukraine is building the arch and the safe confinement in conditions of war, when it opposes Russian aggression," Poroshenko said.

The president thanked the international community for its support and solidarity with Ukraine.

EBRD President Suma Chakrabarti being present at the ceremony, in turn, said the NSC in a year will be transferred to the balance sheet of Ukrainian authorities.
