PACE members do not support Russian delegation's comeback - Ukrainian representative to CoE

Any efforts towards the Russian delegation's comeback to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) do not enjoy the support of Assembly members, Ukrainian Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe Dmytro Kuleba said on Channel 5.

"Indeed, [PACE President Pedro] Agramunt believes that Russia should return to the Assembly and that the dialogue should be maintained inside that body [...]. Efforts are being taken at the current session to adjust the PACE regulations so that the Russians can return in January 2017; however, the adjustments have been put on hold because advocates of the plan are not receiving sufficient support for their plan from Assembly members," Kuleba said.

The Ukrainian envoy believes that the Russian delegation's return to PACE may discredit the Assembly and may trigger a crisis within it.

"From the angle of the general diplomatic situation, if the Russians return early next year it would escalate the crisis in the Assembly and would discredit it. By taking that step, the Assembly would lose the status of a respected international institution. We believe that the Assembly will bear principal risks from the return of the Russians," Kuleba said.
