Power becomes closed group acting under 'with-us-or-against-us' principle - Shuster

Presenter of the Shuster LIVE talk show, journalist Savik Shuster, believes that at present power has become a "closed group." He said that relations between his television channel and authorities have worsened.

"I think that authorities have become a closed group structure. The only principle is: you're either with us, or against us," Shuster said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

He said authorities do not tolerate ideological dissension now.

Asked to compare the present situation and the situation a year ago (the relations between journalists in general, Shuster's TV channel and authorities), he said that as for his channel, relations are worsening.

He said tax authorities all of the sudden came and accused him of violating laws and rules.

"This story with a permit to work that they want to annul. I do not want to say that they were questioning – these were questions and answers at the tax office. This makes us to live in permanent stress. We understand that this stress comes from above. There is no realistic reason to behave in such a manner. We are taxpayers, large taxpayers. We do not pay back-door salaries," Shuster said.

He said that permanent threats are heard in different forms.

"You know what you heard after the murder of Sheremet [journalist Pavel Sheremet killed on July 20]: "What, Moscow? Why should they do this? If Moscow did it, they would kill you."

These words are unpleasant. When I remember Maidan, the program was closed – Inter TV channel did not prolong the contract. Then I entered the country and thought, "If I had been permitted or not to go there, what would have happened the next day?" I feel the same today. I do not know what will happen tomorrow. When I return to Kyiv, I do not know if they will allow me to enter the country," Shuster said.
