We do not have money for police uniforms, wages - National police chief to MPs

The proper legislative provision and financing are the main elements of the successful work of Ukrainian policemen, Ukrainian National Police Chief Khatia Dekanoidze has said.

"It is important when the Verkhovna Rada supports the National Police… We do not have money and budget to provide the policemen with clothes and shoes," she said on Wednesday, speaking at a meeting of the parliamentary committee for legal provision of law enforcement.

She said that the figures for crime growth have never been hidden.

"Yes, crimes have increased by 23%," she said, explaining that more than a half of them involve property disputes.

"The problem is that our people are getting poorer," she said.

She also spoke about police cars damaged in car accidents. She said accidents happened earlier, but no one reported them. .

Dekanoidze said that each tenth crime is committed by persons released under the so-called "Savchenko" law (the law on improving the procedure for counting preliminary detention as part of the term of sentence), adding that some 34,000 convicts will be released under the measure.

She called on the lawmakers to provide the National Police with legal support and proper financing. In addition, the police chief asked MPs not to involve the National Police in politics.
