Poroshenko calls for more intl pressure on Russia, including in UN Security Council

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called on Ukrainian diplomats to ensure international political-legal condemnation of the actions of Russia on Ukraine.

"There is a need to ensure international political-legal recognition and condemnation of Russia's military aggression in Ukraine, the occupation of Crimea, massive human rights violations in Donbas and Crimea," Poroshenko said at a meeting with representatives of Ukrainian diplomatic missions and in the presence of Polish President Andrjei Duda in Kyiv on Wednesday.

The international law framework is currently not enough to support Ukraine and diplomats need to intensify this work at a global level, especially in the context of the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly, he said.

"Ukraine should put forward new initiatives for the recognition and condemnation of Russia's crimes in Ukraine, the UN Security Council should be used to put the aggressor where it belongs," the Ukrainian president said.

He also said Russia's plans for international recognition of Crimea as part of Russian territory did not pan out.
