Rada deputy Onyschenko preparing for Olympics in Austria, fears for his life in Ukraine

Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine deputy Oleksandr Onyschenko says that he is in Austria and preparing for the Olympic Games.

"I decided against being arrested publicly in Ukraine's parliamentary chamber and am now getting ready for the Olympics, training in Austria," the MP wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

Onyschenko said he disagreed with how the case against him is being handled. "What is going on now is nothing more than selective justice lacking any evidentiary base. It's a kind of special operation without proof. [The case] against me was agreed earlier. No proof is necessary."

Onyschenko maintains that "many people in power DO NOT WANT me to start talking. This is why I think my life would be in danger [in Ukraine].

Onyschenko's lawyer Olha Prosianiuk on Tuesday was reported by the Ukrainian Internet news portal Ukrainska Pravda [Ukrainian Truth] as saying, "According to information I have received, Onyschenko is a member of Ukraine's Olympic equestrian team, which will be training in Austria and Hungary. There is reason to believe that he is there and preparing for the Olympic Games.

Onyschenko participated in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.
