Poroshenko opposes MPs' abuse of right to appeal to NAB for political purposes

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has opposed the abuse by people's deputies of the right to appeal to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NAB) for political purposes.

"Today I have a report on the situation with the statistics of investigations into certain criminal cases in the unified register. We have an MP who has registered more than 300 appeals since the establishment of the bureau," the president said, communicating with the NAB employees.

At the same time, the president said the deputy refuses to come and give evidence for his own 294 appeals.

"They ask at least to come if you file appeals, but they do not come," Poroshenko said.

The president noted this situation should be improved.

"I am not a great expert on this subject, but I fully support the problem you've raised, therefore offer amendments and I believe that we need to put changes to the law," Poroshenko said.

He believes that the NAB should not be used "for political showdowns," while the bureau needs to focus on investigation into resonant corruption cases.
