Nazarbayev, Poroshenko discuss situation in eastern Ukraine, implementation of Minsk agreements

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev met with his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko on Friday. This is the first official visit by Poroshenko to Astana.

"The meeting addressed methods of strengthening cooperation in the sphere of trade and economics, the coal industry, transport and logistics, and the agro-industrial sector," the Kazakh presidential press service has reported.

The report says the leaders of the two countries exchanged opinions on vital international issues, including the situation in Ukraine's east and the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Nazarbayev said he believes the first official visit by Poroshenko to Kazakhstan "will help improve economic cooperation and 'check the clocks' on regional and international issues," the report says.

The Ukrainian president, for his part, thanked Nazarbayev for his invitation to visit Kazakhstan, pointing out the numerous political, economic, cultural, humanitarian and social relations between the two countries.

The Ukrainian also emphasized interest in intensifying comprehensive cooperation on various tracks.

Poroshenko gave high marks to the efforts made by the president of Kazakhstan to promote and maintain peace in Ukraine.

Additionally, the Ukrainian president congratulated Nazarbayev on the 550th anniversary of the Kazakh Khanate, pointing out the importance of this anniversary, which is a symbol of statehood and the deep historical roots of the republic, the press service has reported.
