Ukraine's GDP by 2040 may come close to Swiss GDP for 2013 - Finance Minister

Ukraine's dollar-denominated GDP with an annual 4% growth over 25 years may come close to the GDP of Switzerland for 2013, Minister of Finance Natalie Jaresko has said while speaking about the winning conditions of restructuring Ukraine's private external debt at an enlarged meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers in Kyiv.

"The IMF baseline forecast in relation to the pace of development of our economy is 4% per year. The latest economic history of Ukraine shows that only during nine out of 24 years its GDP growth exceeded 3%," she said.

"It should be noted that under this scenario with an annual 4% real rise in GDP every year our GDP will grow from the current $84 billion to $600 billion by 2040, and that is the level of welfare of Switzerland today (according to data from the World Bank, the Swiss GDP for 2013 totaled $685.4 billion for the population of 8.1 million people against the 42.8 million population of Ukraine on July 1, 2015)," Jaresko said.

According to the World Bank, Ukraine's GDP per capita in 2014 was $2,910, while in Switzerland it was $84,700. This year, Ukraine's GDP per capita is expected to fall to $2,000.
