Sytnyk advises PGO to ask UK for explanation for his trip to London

Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine Artem Sytnyk has said that he didn't receive any notice of suspicion regarding the investigation of his trip to London and he advised the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (PGO) to ask the UK about the the reasons for his trip.

"The investigation is being conducted, due to the elements of crime foreseen by Part 1, Article 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, but as far as I know, not into me but into Anti-Corruption Bureau employees that were in London," he said on 112 Ukraine TV Channel on Thursday.

Sytnyk said that he hasn't received a notice of suspicion.

He said that he had sent the report on the first two months of agency's work to the President of Ukraine and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

"On October 1, we start working, but before that measures aren't taken to create the anti-corruption prosecution office. Statements broke out that some kind of investigation is conducted into our visit to London," he added.

According to him, an invitation was sent to Sytnyk and his First Deputy Gizo Uglava from the UK included the suggestion to meet with UK law enforcement agencies. The inviting party also paid for their flight and stay.

As for Sytnyk's wife's flight to London, he said: "We paid for her ticket to London from my salary. She had a personal goal to visit relatives in London. As for Iryna Danko [his wife], she ensures the communication with international donors, representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations. The UK paid for her flight and stay," Sytnyk said.

He also said that he had received a letter from the British embassy in Ukraine saying that if the PGO had any questions about the trip, it should address the UK for an explanation.

Sytnyk noted that the invitation was for two persons and there was not any kind of a delegation.

According to him, if the Prosecutor General's Office, after studying the business trip documents, has questions, he will "consider it an attempt to discredit the Bureau and sabotage the beginning of its work."

Sytnyk also said he will not quit as there is no reason for him to do so.

As reported, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office has registered information in the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations on including the spouse of and advisor to Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau Artem Sytnyk into the agency's official delegation for its trip to London.

A scan-copy of a reply to an official parliamentary enquiry by independent MP Vitaliy Kupriy who is a representative of inter-factional group 'Deputy Control' was published on Kupriy's Facebook page on Thursday. The reply is signed by First Deputy Prosecutor General Yuriy Sevruk. The entry in the unified register was made under No. 42015000000001674; the offence is preliminary qualified under Part 1 of article 364 of the Criminal Code (abuse of power or position).

According to Kupriy, Sytnyk said that his wife allegedly paid for her trip to London from her own pocket. However, in her income declaration for 2014, she stated an annual income of only UAH 113,000 which "raises doubts about such a possibility" and requires verification, the lawmaker said.

In his enquiry the MP also asked for clarification on whether Danko is indeed an advisor to Sytnyk, and if so, proof of her appointment should be provided.
