Tbilisi says new format to be created to settle relations with Russia

It is necessary to create a new format for political settlement with Russia, as it was done in the economy sector, Georgian Deputy Prime Minister, Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze said on July 12 whilst live on air with the Public Broadcaster of Georgia TV and radio company.

"This issue will definitely be discussed in our team [the Georgian Dream ruling coalition]," Kaladze said.

When commenting on the fact that two days ago the dividing line in the Tskhinval region was moved inland, towards Georgian villages, the minister said this was not the first case.

"This lasts for years, after the August 2008 war, which was a result of the irresponsible policy of the previous authorities," Kaladze said.

In regard to politics, Georgia and Russia are in a serious situation – the two countries have even disrupted diplomatic ties, the minister said.

"When we came to power, we said that it is very important to settle and stabilize relations with Russia, and the Abashidze-Karasin format has made big steps in this direction in improving economic relations. In particular, Georgian products are on the Russian market again, which is important for our farmers and the country's economy in general," Kaladze said.

It is very important to take certain steps in the political direction, the minister said. "I think that the Abashidze-Karasin format might not be useful in this direction. It is necessary to come up with another format so that we are able to settle political relations," he said.

It has been reported that the Georgian Foreign Ministry said on July 12 it condemned actions of border guards at the dividing line between Georgia and South Ossetia.
