NATO promises to support Ukraine – Patriarch Filaret

Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Kyiv Patriarchate) Patriarch Filaret has met with NATO Deputy Secretary-General Alexander Vershbow and discussed the situation in Ukraine and possible ways to solve the ongoing crisis.

"[He] promised to support Ukraine," Filaret told Interfax-Ukraine after the meeting.

He said that Vershbow spoke of the necessity to prevent World War III, which might start because of the actions of the Russian authorities.

"We urge: while it's not too late, the aggressor must be stopped so that it wouldn't be like before the World War II, when Hitler was slowly conquering countries, and then the World War II started," Filaret said.

During his two-day visit to Brussels, Filaret held 17 meeting with EU and NATO leaders, including European Council head Donald Tusk, European Union's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, and EU Commissioner for European Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn.

Filaret also addressed MEPs.
