Escalation of Donbas conflict won't impact on planned Ukraine-EU events – Tombinski

An escalation of the conflict in Donbas will not have an impact on scheduled events between Ukraine and the European Union, including the Ukraine-EU summit and Eastern Partnership summit in Riga, Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Jan Tombinski has said.

We do not think that this may influence the plans to hold a summit and conference in Riga, he told Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday when asked about whether these events could be cancelled if the situation in Donbas worsens.

However, he acknowledged that the situation in Donbas is a geopolitical issue which doesn't just concern Ukraine and the EU.

Tombinski said that the Normandy Quartet had recently met on the issue and that Donbas is still on the agenda.

He said that European Council President Donald Tusk, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, and the European Union's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini will attend the Ukraine-EU summit in Ukraine on April 27.

The summit will cover strategic issues including the implementation of the Association Agreement, and the conditions to create a Free Trade Area which will be fully inaugurated on January 1, 2016. On April 28, a conference on promoting reform in Ukraine is also scheduled to be held.
