Poroshenko, Cameron discuss Donbas situation over phone

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has had a phone conversation with UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

The two leaders discussed the situation in Donbas after the declaration of a ceasefire on February 15, the Ukrainian president's press service reported. "President Poroshenko stressed that a permanent and full ceasefire along the entire contact line was necessary for the further withdrawal of heavy weaponry," the statement reads.

Poroshenko also thanked Cameron for his personal support of Ukraine at the European Council session in Brussels on February 12, and the UK’s strong position in support of Ukraine which was laid out in a recent G7 resolution.

Cameron reassured Poroshenko that the UK would support keeping the European Union's sanctions against Russia in place until the Minsk agreements are fulfilled. He also said that Ukraine could count on the support of the UK in the UN Security Council.

Poroshenko and Cameron agreed on the close coordination of further efforts towards peacefully resolving the situation in Donbas.
