Kyiv plans to resume TV broadcasting in militants-held areas of Donbas

The Ukrainian Information Policy Ministry is considering the possibility of restoring Ukrainian television stations' broadcasting on the territory of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics.

Information Policy Minister Yuriy Stets said during the Shuster Live program that Kyiv would have to "help restore public television broadcasting in 2015 in some areas, including the territories" that are controlled by the militants today.

Broadcasts of Ukrainian TV and radio stations are unable to reach districts near the border, while Russian TV channels can broadcast inside Ukraine, the minister said.

The ministry also considers plans to transform the BTB TV station into a public foreign-language channel, he said.

"The funding of BTB will be stopped starting from January 1 because it is simply ridiculous for the National Bank of Ukraine to have its own television channel, which no one needs. I will tell you that its technical facilities will be used to establish a high-quality foreign-language broadcaster," Stets said.
