Jemilev, Poroshenko discuss possible creation of Crimean Tatar battalion

The commissioner for the Crimean Tatar people and parliamentary candidate from the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko, Mustafa Jemilev, has discussed with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko the possibility of creating a Crimean Tatar battalion of the southern direction.

"We discussed with the president the creation of a Crimean Tatar military unit of the southern direction, because the situation in Kherson region is quite alarming. It's still under discussion, and then we'll see," the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko's press service quoted Jemilev as saying.

Jemilev said that about 450 Crimean Tatars were members of various military battalions in the anti-terrorist operation in Donbas, including on the front line. The leader of the Crimean Tatar people said that relatives of these servicemen were exposed to particular danger in Crimea and were hostage to the local authorities. He noted that the names of these servicemen should be classified.

Jemilev also expressed confidence that if the Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians are together, then they will be able to liberate Crimea.

"The Crimean Tatars understand, of course, that the future of the Crimean Tatar people is a strong independent Ukraine," he said.

Earlier, Jemilev said that many Crimean Tatars would leave Crimea because of Russia's policy.

As reported, in April this year, the Russian authorities banned former Mejlis leader and Ukrainian MP Jemilev from entering Russia, including Crimea, for five years.
