European Council to consider additional measures against Russia's actions by late June – Rompuy

The European Council at the end of June will assess the situation with de-escalation in Ukraine and will consider additional measures against Russia over Ukraine, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has said.

"The European Council will assess the situation [in Ukraine] at the end of June," he said at a press conference following G7 summit in Brussels.

Rompuy also reminded that G7 countries and the European Council "stand ready to intensify targeted sanctions against Russia should events so require."

Besides, Rompuy said the EC also expects Russia to cooperate with President-Elect of Ukraine.

"We urge Russia to accelerate withdrawal of its military forces on the border with Ukraine, and stop the flow of weapons and militants across the border and to exercise its influence among armed separatists to lay down their weapons and renounce violence," he said on behalf of the European Council.

According to the European Council president, G7 and European Council elaborated a diplomatic agenda aimed at de-escalation with Russia.

"We developed, as G7, a positive agenda. A diplomatic agenda aimed at de-escalation with Russia, a stabilization agenda to help Ukraine, financially, economically, and politically, not least by signing – as the European Union – the Association Agreement with Ukraine," he underscored.
