Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has congratulated European Council President Herman Van Rompuy on his birthday and noted his support for Ukraine's European aspirations .

"Your personal contribution as the first president of the European Council in strengthening the European Union and increasing its role in a modern world deserves the highest approval. Ukraine is grateful for your support for the European choice of our state and its further rapprochement with the EU, an effective mechanism of which will be the future Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union," the presidential press service quoted Yanukovych as saying.

Yanukovych said he was confident that through joint efforts Ukraine will achieve success on the path it has chosen.

He also said he hopes for the continuation of the constructive dialog and looks forward to seeing Rompuy at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in late November.

Yanukovych wished Rompuy good health, inexhaustible energy and inspiration in his work.
