EU lawmaker: Ukraine must free jailed protesters unconditionally
Chairman of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Elmar Brok on Wednesday insisted on the unconditional release of all protesters who have been arrested during pro-European Union demonstrations in Ukraine.
Brok told a news conference in Kyiv that current discussions on a proposed amnesty for jailed protesters made no sense. According to Brok, the arrests meant violations of human rights. The EU lawmaker argued that it was essential that the government and opposition should reach a compromise but that no valid agreements could involve rights violations.
Brok heads a European Parliament delegation on a visit to Ukraine on January 28-30.
