Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said that Ukraine and Azerbaijan have good potential for the development of effective cooperation in the energy sector.

"Issues of the fuel and energy sector have always been of special importance in the agenda of our relations, and today we discussed how we can cooperate more closely in this area in future, because there are so many areas where we can actively interact," he said in a statement to the media after Ukrainian-Azerbaijani talks in Kyiv on Monday.

He said that Azerbaijan, as a manufacturer of energy resources, and Ukraine, as an energy consumer and transit country, play an important role in ensuring the energy security of many countries.

Speaking about other areas of cooperation, Aliyev noted successful cooperation between Ukraine and Azerbaijan in the military and technical sphere.

"There are good traditions of cooperation in the military and technical sphere... I think that there is good potential to increase cooperation in this area," he said.

Aliyev also stressed the need to intensify the work on the rapprochement of the regions of Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

"In many areas of cooperation we have good and positive results... I'm very satisfied with the results of my visit," he said, adding that Ukrainian-Azerbaijani partnership will obviously reach an even higher level.

The Azerbaijani president is on an official visit to Ukraine on November 17-18.
