Court to consider appeal against arrest of Ukrainian cook from Arctic Sunrise on Thursday, says Foreign Ministry

The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine has reported that an appeal against the arrest of the Ukrainian cook from Greenpeace's Arctic Sunrise ship Ruslan Yakushev will be considered on Thursday.

"The court was to consider an appeal against a ruling of a Murmansk court about putting the Ukrainian citizen into custody yesterday, but due to the need for Yakushev and his defense team to study the case, the hearing was moved for today," Director of Information Policy Department of the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine Yevhen Perebyinis told Interfax-Ukraine.

He also said that the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine was aware of media reports that the charges against the Ukrainian were allegedly changed from terrorism into hooliganism, but added that the investigation had not officially notified Yakushev's defense counsel about it.

Perebyinis admitted that this information might be provided on Thursday.

Greenpeace's boat was detained in the Pechora Sea on September 19 for the attempted rally against oil extraction at the Prirazlomnaya platform. On September 24, the Arctic Sunrise was convoyed by border guards to the Murmansk port. The boat had a multinational crew of 30 people, including three Russians, on board.

A Murmansk court has placed under arrest all 30 Greenpeace activists, who were on board and who have been charged with piracy.

On September 30, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry handed a note to a Russian diplomat over the arrest of a Ukrainian crewmember of Greenpeace's Arctic Sunrise vessel, Ruslan Yakushev.

On October 1, Yakushev's defense team filed an appeal against his arrest.
