Anatoly Kucherena, the head of the Russian Public Chamber, said the work on documents needed for the arrival of the father of former CIA employee Edward Snowden in Russia will begin as soon as possible.

"We had a phone conversation with him [Edward Snowden] today and we reached an agreement that I will issue his father an invitation to Russia. I hope the visa process will not take a lot of time," Kucherena told reporters on Wednesday.

Kucherena said Edward Snowden's father will arrive in Russia with a U.S. lawyer for Snowden.

"He will arrive and we will work together on guaranteeing Edward's personal safety," Kucherena said.

Snowden fled to Hong Kong in May 2013 and then released information concerning secret surveillance operations of the U.S. special services on the Internet. Snowden is currently in the transit area of the Sheremetyevo airport. He had booked a transit flight through Moscow but could not leave the Russian capital because the U.S. authorities revoked his passport.

The United States continues to pursue Snowden's extradition in order to charge him with releasing secret information. Snowden has officially requested temporary asylum in Russia.

Lon Snowden, the father of Edward Snowden, earlier confirmed that he has received a proposal from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) to fly to Moscow. At the same time, he said he would like to more clearly understand the reasons why the FBI wants him to fly to Russia.
