Snowden may leave Moscow airport on Wednesday - lawyer

Former CIA employee Edward Snowden may be provided with a paper entitling him to stay on Russian territory on Wednesday, Izvestia reported with reference to lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.

"Judging by the Federal Migration Service practice, such documents are considered for up to seven days, after which a special paper is issued, with which Snowden will be entitled to freely move around Russian territory. We filed the petition [for temporary asylum] on July 16. Hence, the deadline expires on Wednesday," Kucherena told Izvestia.

However, the migration service could take more time for consideration, as the case is too complicated and extraordinary, he said.

Meanwhile, the newspaper says the consideration of Snowden's temporary asylum application should take up to three months. Kucherena said he was sure the decision will be positive.

Snowden fled to Hong Kong in May 2013 and then released classified information regarding U.S. special services' online surveillance activities. Following this, Snowden went to Moscow and has been in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport since June 23. The U.S. has revoked Snowden's passport and is seeking his extradition. Snowden officially applied for temporary asylum in Russia last week.
